RSF Firefighters join others in San Diego County "Fill The Boot" Charity
|
On May 7th 2008 Rancho Santa Fe Professional Firefighters, under the direction of Firefighter Paul Lorenzo, hit the streets of Rancho Santa Fe, 4S Ranch, and Fairbanks Ranch for the Burn Institutes annual “Give Burns the Boot”, charity drive. Each year some 250,000 children are injured and more than 1,000 die each year as a result of burn trauma. The Burn Institute works tirelessly throughout the year to help bring that number down with prevention classes and also research for those burn injuries. This San Diego County wide boot drive helped raise over $200,000 for the burn institute. Off duty and on duty Rancho Santa Fe Firefighters committed their time to help this worthwhile cause. Thanks to all those involved in this one day event. The commuters and residents of Rancho Santa Fe contributed $27,540 toward the drive giving us the most collected for the third year in a row. RSF Firefighters look forward to working with our neighboring fire departments in the future in the goal of getting these totals even higher. Without the support of the RSF Fire District and the generous donations of the community none of this could happen.

Liam Foundation Charity

The Rancho Santa Fe Firefighters Association (RSFFA) is involved in various fundraising activities throughout the year. From pancake breakfasts to the "Fill the Boot" boot drive for the burn institute, to firehouse dinner auctions the RSF Firefighters Association is very active in its outreach towards the community. One of the annual events that we participate in is the Summer Solstice Wiffle Ball Tournament. It is a full day of friendly competition and family games that ends in a classy dinner function until late in the evening. Dinner includes entertainment, live and silent auctions, and plenty of inspiration that is set to the chosen theme of that year! This is an awesome family event that was started by a local family to celebrate the life of their son Liam who is battling Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited disease that affects the lungs and digestive systems of many young children each year. A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce thick mucous that clogs the lungs and obstructs the pancreas that hinder natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food. For more information on the aspects of this disease and how they are working on a cure please visit: http://www.cff.org/AboutCF/ There is currently no cure for Cystic Fibrosis but the foundation has greatly helped to improve the quality and length of life for CF patients. Quality of life and a cure for the disease is the ultimate goal and that is the spirit of this event! The ‘Wiffle Ball Tournament’ was originally an annual get together between college friends on the beach. When Liam was born they turned that social event into a fundraiser and further heightened their sense of community and friendship. That event has grown tremendously over the last 16 years and the support has continued to grow by the community and friends. This family event has raised close to a $1million dollars over the years and is truly a celebration of life. The RSF Professional Firefighters were approached to organize and cook the pancake breakfast for the annual event. We have cooked the breakfast annually for the past 3 years for approximately 300 contestants to kick off the opening ceremonies of the Tournament. Many of the guests at this event are residents of the Rancho Santa Fe Fire District and it is another great way to get involved with the community. I have been friends with Liam and his family for many years. It has been great getting to know their friends and community better through this event. It is an honor that they have allowed my coordinating the breakfast as an RSFFA Local 4349 member. Liam truly loves the spirit of competition and family atmosphere that this fundraiser is all about. Building friendships and helping to serve the community is one aspect the RSF Firefighters are actively involved in and the ‘Summer Solstice Wiffle Ball Tournament’ is no exception! (Note: currently this is an invite only competition due to capacity)

Danner/Hawk Toy Drive for San Diego County Victims
Updated
On: Dec 17, 2007 (17:32:00)
The smoke had not yet cleared from the fires of 2007 when it already became evident that the devastation would directly effect so many San Diego County children. Understanding that replacing bikes, skateboards, and toys would not be top priority to the families who lost their homes and all their possessions, Rancho Santa Fe Firefighter, Chris Danner, set out to help a few of the children in his own community and beyond. Chris decided to contact professional skateboarder and North County local Tony Hawk for help. Chris contacted The Tony Hawk Foundation via email explaining what he had seen first hand and what he wished to do. Although the foundation typically focuses on the development of skate parks in low income areas throughout the country, their response was an immediate “Yes! How many children need help?” Chris explained that he originally was hoping to bring some smiles to just a few children before the holidays but that of course he would love to help as many as he could. The Tony Hawk Foundation got to work in finding donations and called Chris within a week to find out where to have the 130 bikes, 60 skateboards, hundreds of shirts and backpacks, and toys delivered. After a short panic of where to store all the donations, Chris contacted The Village Presbyterian Church in the community of Rancho Santa Fe and they were more than happy to assist and even donated Sports Authority gift cards for helmets to go with each bike. The Rancho Santa Fe Professional Firefighters Association was not only able to give donations to every child in their community, but were also able to reach out to the hard hit area of Rancho Bernardo as well as fellow firefighter families in the county who also lost their homes. An event was held December 8th at The Village Church in rancho Santa Fe and approximately 100 families were invited to receive the donations from The Rancho Santa Fe Firefighters. Thanks to Tony Hawk and his foundation, what started the firefighters hope to help a few children who lost everything in the fires turned into over 100 children receiving brand new bikes, skateboards, clothes, backpacks, and toys just before the holidays.
