Fairbanks Station is torn down

Fairbanks Ranch will see big changes to its fire station in 2010. As the 40 year old station is demolished, the current crews protecting Fairbanks watch on from across the street. Even though the old station contained many old memories, the district is glad to see it go and be replaced by a new, state of the art, highly functional station that can serve the community better. The Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District has purchased land to the East of the old station site to expand onto which will provide employee parking, an emergency generator, hose drying rack, and entrance for a "Pull though" apparatus bay. Living quarters will be located on the 2nd story, and yes, this station will have a pole. Construction is slated to begin within a few months and last around a year and a half. The current, temporary station protecting the area is located behind the Horizon Christian Fellowship Church on El Apajo.

2009 Pancake Breakfast
Posted
On: Feb 07, 2010 (10:51:15)
The much anticipated fire district’s annual Rancho Days Pancake Breakfast came and went with a resounding success. Whether it was the resident’s hunger for the traditional breakfast of pancakes, sausage links, and eggs, or their children’s constant pleading to visit the fire station, ride on the fire engine, and spray a real fire hose, this year’s event turned out to be one of the most attended in its history. Around four thousand dollars was raised through the sale of food and association clothing which, as always, will go to fund other charitable events. Appreciation for the success of the breakfast goes to Stumps Village Market for the donated food, Café Positano for the 32 gallons of donated coffee, and all of the firefighters, board members, SDMSE employees, and civilians that brought the whole thing together. After 20 years of hosting this event, those involved have got every detail covered and carefully planned out. We hope that the community we serve appreciates this event as much as we enjoy putting it on.

North County Fire Agencies Consolidate Management
Updated
On: Feb 07, 2010 (10:50:00)

In a step towards consolidation, the four North County Fire Agencies of Rancho Santa Fe, Encinitas, Solana Beach and Del Mar met at Seaside Beach parking lot on October 15, 2009 to sign a historic agreement that changes the way their agencies are managed. Starting on that same date, Encinitas Fire Department will begin providing management services, and Rancho Santa Fe will provide battalion chiefs for all the areas. This comes at time when the stressed economy has prompted cities and fire boards to research all ideas that would cut operating costs. Annually, Encinitas will save $282,300; Solana Beach, $608,400; Del Mar, $173,600; and Rancho Santa Fe, $367,500 compared with the cost of separate management teams, said Chief Muir of Encinitas Fire Department. The arrangement will provide more consistent service, improved communication and a quicker response time for the duty chiefs, Muir said. Encinitas Councilman Jerome Stocks also noted that if all goes well, the agencies might consider merging fire departments entirely. No fire positions were lost in this endeavor. Solana Beach and Del Mar have already been contracting out their fire management to Rancho Santa Fe Fire District on a temporary basis for nearly 3 years now. Each agency will retain its own identity with the exception of the Rancho Santa Fe battalion Chief’s vehicle that has now been labeled with all four agency symbols and lists the communities it is serving.

2009 MDA Chili Cookoff
Updated
On: Feb 07, 2010 (10:51:00)
.jpg)
June 20th, 2009, members of the Local 4349 gathered at Embarcadero Park in San Diego with ladle in hand to compete in the 29th Annual Firefighter Tailgate Chili Cook-off sponsored by the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The MDA is a voluntary health agency -- a dedicated partnership between scientists and concerned citizens aimed at conquering neuromuscular diseases that affect more than a million Americans. Each year the MDA sponsors this event to raise money for this noble cause. When tasting began, patrons were offered something very different than any other chili present; It was a “white” chili made with white beans and chicken and topped with corn chips when served. According to many, the taste was unique and some of the best around. Tasters were served bowls of chili through the jaws of a large shark mouth to sample the appropriately named Great White Chili and none left disappointed. 4349 President Dave Livingstone, and members Paul Lorenzo, Nathan Fritchle, and Craig McVey were this year’s chili chefs and, although 4349 did not bring home the trophy, a great time was had by all who attended. By the end of the day, and 10 gallons of chili gone, it was obvious that Great White Chili was a keeper.

Danner/Hawk Toy Drive for San Diego County Victims
Updated
On: Oct 08, 2009 (22:46:00)
The smoke had not yet cleared from the fires of 2007 when it already became evident that the devastation would directly effect so many San Diego County children. Understanding that replacing bikes, skateboards, and toys would not be top priority to the families who lost their homes and all their possessions, Rancho Santa Fe Firefighter, Chris Danner, set out to help a few of the children in his own community and beyond. Chris decided to contact professional skateboarder and North County local Tony Hawk for help. Chris contacted The Tony Hawk Foundation via email explaining what he had seen first hand and what he wished to do. Although the foundation typically focuses on the development of skate parks in low income areas throughout the country, their response was an immediate “Yes! How many children need help?” Chris explained that he originally was hoping to bring some smiles to just a few children before the holidays but that of course he would love to help as many as he could. The Tony Hawk Foundation got to work in finding donations and called Chris within a week to find out where to have the 130 bikes, 60 skateboards, hundreds of shirts and backpacks, and toys delivered. After a short panic of where to store all the donations, Chris contacted The Village Presbyterian Church in the community of Rancho Santa Fe and they were more than happy to assist and even donated Sports Authority gift cards for helmets to go with each bike. The Rancho Santa Fe Professional Firefighters Association was not only able to give donations to every child in their community, but were also able to reach out to the hard hit area of Rancho Bernardo as well as fellow firefighter families in the county who also lost their homes. An event was held December 8th at The Village Church in rancho Santa Fe and approximately 100 families were invited to receive the donations from The Rancho Santa Fe Firefighters. Thanks to Tony Hawk and his foundation, what started the firefighters hope to help a few children who lost everything in the fires turned into over 100 children receiving brand new bikes, skateboards, clothes, backpacks, and toys just before the holidays.
