Danner/Hawk Toy Drive for San Diego County Victims
Sep 19, 2011

The smoke had not yet cleared from the fires of 2007 when it already became evident that the devastation would directly effect so many San Diego County children. Understanding that replacing bikes, skateboards, and toys would not be top priority to the families who lost their homes and all their possessions, Rancho Santa Fe Firefighter, Chris Danner, set out to help a few of the children in his own community and beyond. Chris decided to contact professional skateboarder and North County local Tony Hawk for help. Chris contacted The Tony Hawk Foundation via email explaining what he had seen first hand and what he wished to do. Although the foundation typically focuses on the development of skate parks in low income areas throughout the country, their response was an immediate “Yes! How many children need help?” Chris explained that he originally was hoping to bring some smiles to just a few children before the holidays but that of course he would love to help as many as he could. The Tony Hawk Foundation got to work in finding donations and called Chris within a week to find out where to have the 130 bikes, 60 skateboards, hundreds of shirts and backpacks, and toys delivered. After a short panic of where to store all the donations, Chris contacted The Village Presbyterian Church in the community of Rancho Santa Fe and they were more than happy to assist and even donated Sports Authority gift cards for helmets to go with each bike.

The Rancho Santa Fe Professional Firefighters Association was not only able to give donations to every child in their community, but were also able to reach out to the hard hit area of Rancho Bernardo as well as fellow firefighter families in the county who also lost their homes.
An event was held December 8th at The Village Church in rancho Santa Fe and approximately 100 families were invited to receive the donations from The Rancho Santa Fe Firefighters. Thanks to Tony Hawk and his foundation, what started the firefighters hope to help a few children who lost everything in the fires turned into over 100 children receiving brand new bikes, skateboards, clothes, backpacks, and toys just before the holidays.
